Perhaps the strongest appeal of vintage curtains is their iconic design patterns. There is more that goes into a design than just a pattern. Color and material is also carefully chosen to craft a quality item. This may be why the key design symbols have lasted throughout the years. The combination of all of the design elements is what makes the end product special.

Red and white were popular colors in the 1940’s. Many kitchens were decorated in these shades. The classic red and white checkerboard pattern was common. Another great design is the cherry pattern. This is another easily identifiable image that hints of times past.

Some telltale signs of vintage curtains are within children’s curtains, especially nursery rhyme patterned panels. If you look closely at any picture style pattern, you can see a few clues to its age. First, look at the subject matter of the scene. Is the story popular today or from decades ago? Let’s face it – today TweedleDee and TweedleDum, or the three little kittens, are not exactly popular stories for our kids today. Also look at how the characters are portrayed. Are the children whimsical and plump? What is the overall color scheme of the design? This can be a major clue to identify the time period it was made.

The 1960’s were a time of change. The design reflected this. The color palette was brighter and the patterns became more abstract. The term psychedelic was used and reflected in trendy décor. The designer, Pucci, was a trend setter and made wild color and psychedelic prints his trademark. This popular design style found its way into the textiles of the home. Curtains and bedding, as well as linens began to appear with the swirly bright colors that reflected popular culture.

After the explosion of shape and color from the 1960’s design, came a change. It seemed the 1970’s were yelling, “stop!” to the 60’s and countered with a much more muted pallet. The earth tones became widely popular. Some of the most popular colors were avocado green, harvest gold, and other earth tones such as rust, brown, and orange. It seemed everything in the home became subdued. From kitchen appliances to rec-room paneling, things in the home appeared more grounded. With these changes came the need to change the fabrics around the home. Crazy patterns and colors gave way to a calmer simple style for window treatments. Recognizable images replaced the abstract designs. Kitchens began to see cooking related items in the fabrics. Images of pots and pans, spoons, as well as mushrooms and other fruits and vegetables were incorporated into the curtain panels and dish towels, as well as wallpaper.

Throughout the decades some design patterns remain constant. These are the classic patterns that can stand the test of time. So, whatever color scheme, and design style you fancy, you are sure to find vintage curtains to match your décor.

Care must be taken when handling authentic vintage curtains. After all, you have gone out of your way to find the real deal and not reproduction. In some cases these fabrics are almost one hundred years old or more.

Because the method for manufacturing window treatments has changed over the years, these items can be a challenge to hang. The hardware that is readily available for modern curtains and drapes may not fit your vintage curtains.

Another issue to consider when hanging vintage curtains is the actual window they will cover. Thanks to the improvements in window manufacturing, todays homes have a multitude of window shapes and sizes. If you choose to decorate with vintage items make sure they will cover the intended window.

Older homes can present a different set of challenges when it comes to hanging curtains. It is common for the windows in older homes to go out of square. In addition, the floors may not be level. Take this into consideration when deciding if you want floor length drapes, and which type of window mounts to use.

Inside Mount vs. Outside Mount

There are benefits to both types of mounting styles. In some cases you may even want to use both styles on a single window. For example, you may choose to hand sheers with an inside mount rod, and then cover the window with curtains hung on an outside mounted rod. Many older homes (as well as new homes) have beautiful window moulding. If this is the case for your home, and the window is not terribly out of square, then an inside mount may be your best choice. There are some drawbacks to this method, which are overcome with the outside mount style.

An outside mount curtain rod allows the drapes or curtains to completely cover the window. This fools the eye into thinking the window is bigger than it actually is. You can take this a step further and add even more inches to the outside dimensions to make the overall look seem fuller or grander. If light coming through the window is an issue, an outside mount is the answer. It blocks light out better than inside mounted curtains. This type is obviously more popular with bedroom window treatments.

Curtain Rod Choices

The curtain rod type is an important consideration when decorating with vintage curtains. Make sure the hardware you use will accommodate the pocket size of the curtains. Another consideration is the style of rod. If you are going retro with your window treatments, don’t use an ultra-modern rod; it will look out of place. In addition, many classic styles will need a traverse rod. If the panels you want to hang are pleated or pinch pleated, there is a good chance you will need this type of rod.

Don’t be intimidated by the old styles. The overall design look you will achieve when using vintage curtains will be worth the effort.

Vintage curtains are a popular decorating trend these days. This is due to the fact that the designs can stand the test of time.

The term vintage refers to a specific time of production in the past. On the other hand, the term retro implies styles that reflect vintage items. So, when you see a new item that looks old, it is retro, rather than vintage. If you get confused about which is which, just associate the word retro with refers to.

Although both retro curtains and vintage curtains may look the same, they actually are quite
different. There is nothing like having the real thing. Authentic materials and designs that stand the test of time have a dimension that cannot be duplicated.

The patterns and colors that can be found in vintage curtains or drapes are often telltale signs of the era from which they were made. This is especially true with window treatments created specifically for the kitchen. Imagine a 1950’s kitchen – you can probably see a style of curtain hanging on the windows. This is the key for many wanting to decorate in a specific period. There is an iconic look and designers create the authentic feel with items that produce these image triggers.

Iconic Vintage Curtains

Matching the retro style to the material pattern is the key to creating the period look. A crisp white cotton cloth with the red cherry pattern is classic. Polka dots were also quite popular in the old days. Some fun designs can be associated with so much more than decorating. There are designs that have come to be associated with the social and political movements of the time. A 1960’s psychedelic pattern conjures up so much more than simply a design aesthetic.

Types of Vintage Curtains

There are many different types of vintage drapes and curtains. From café curtains to pinch pleated drapes, there is a wide variety of styling. When decorating in a retro style, it is important to match the type of window treatment to the room style. For example, casual panels with a kitschy pattern should not be put in a formal Victorian parlor.

The construction of the curtains or drapes should also be considered. How will they be hung up on the window? Is there a rod pocket, or will you need a traverse rod with drapery hooks to hang up the cloth? Consider the length of the material as well. Remember a shorter length is considered more casual than the classic floor length style. Finally, choose the material content carefully. Cotton was quite popular in decades past. Lace is classic but can be fragile.

Whatever style you choose, authentic vintage curtains are sure to complement the design scheme of your room.
